1967 Toyota 2000GT, a Japanese Automotive Icon, Now on Display at DFW Car & Toy Museum

The 1967 Toyota 2000GT, a car that redefined Japan's place in the automotive world, is now on display at the DFW Car & Toy Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. This white coupe, co-developed with Yamaha and styled by Albrecht Goertz—designer of the BMW 507—was originally pitched to Nissan before Toyota seized the opportunity to create a hand-built masterpiece. With only 351 ever produced, the 2000GT challenged icons like the Porsche 911 and Jaguar E-Type, offering stunning looks, razor-sharp handling, and up to 200 horsepower in race trim.

“This is the most important Japanese car ever made. Period,” said Ron Sturgeon, founder of the DFW Car & Toy Museum. “It's not just rare—it's a symbol of a moment when the world finally took Toyota seriously as a performance brand.” The museum, located at dfwcarandtoymuseum.com, now houses over 200 collector vehicles and 3,000 vintage toys and collectibles.

This particular 2000GT has a celebrated history, having won both “Best in Show” and “Japanese Jewels” at the 2022 London Concours, making it one of the most acclaimed examples in existence. Powered by a high-revving DOHC inline-six engine capable of 130 mph, the model also saw racing success under Carroll Shelby, who campaigned it in SCCA events. Two special roadsters were built for James Bond's You Only Live Twice, cementing its pop culture legacy.

The display offers visitors a rare opportunity to see the car that reshaped global perceptions of Japanese engineering and design.
