43rd Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition Winners Announced, Spotlighting Emerging Talent

The results of the 43rd Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition were announced, showcasing emerging talent and innovative concepts that are set to invigorate the watch and clock industry. The competition, jointly organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Limited, and the Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Limited, concluded alongside the 45th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and the 14th Salon de TIME. The physical exhibitions, which ended on 5 September, attracted over 17,000 trade buyers from 115 countries and regions.

Since its inception, the competition has aimed to elevate design standards, encourage creativity, and promote Hong Kong-made timepieces globally. This year, the Open Group and Student Group were themed 'Transcending Time' and 'Contours of the Breeze,' respectively. The Open Group challenged participants to translate sensory experiences into abstract designs that break temporal boundaries, while the Student Group focused on capturing the movement of wind. A total of 130 entries were submitted, and a judging panel of eight industry experts, along with celebrity guest judge Joey Thye, selected the winners.

In the Open Group, the Champion was 'Tectonic Indeterminacy' by Chan Pak Hei and Yang Tianxu, sponsored by Golden Hawk Manufactory Ltd. Inspired by pebble forms, the design uses angled facets and a sculpted void to integrate the crown, turning time reading into a spatial and tactile experience. The First Runner-up, 'Channel' by Wong Ting Bong, incorporated a VU meter scale and pointer, making the abstract concepts of time and sound visible. Pang Sze Nga's 'Moment of Stillness' earned Second Runner-up, depicting mountain ranges with gold wire and enamel, featuring a swallow as a messenger of time.

In the Student Group, Yip Yuen Sze, Christine from the Hong Kong Design Institute won Champion with 'Traces of Storm,' a design featuring cyclone-like patterns and lightning-shaped hands, symbolizing courage and breaking new ground. Tam Hei Yiu from Pope Paul VI College took First Runner-up with 'Running through the breeze,' where the hands represent a girl, a tree, and a windmill, conveying perseverance. Lo Hoi Pui from the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong received Second Runner-up for 'Carpe Diem,' inspired by dandelion seeds and a weathervane.

The 'Made-to-Sell Award' recognized Yip Yuen Sze's 'Traces of Storm' for its commercial potential. The award, judged by eight watch manufacturers, will see the design brought into production and launched through the HKTDC's Design Gallery. This initiative underscores the industry's commitment to nurturing new talent and translating innovative ideas into market-ready products.

The competition not only celebrates design excellence but also reinforces Hong Kong's position as a hub for watch and clock innovation.
