Aemetis Positioned for Growth in India's Expanding Biodiesel Market

Aemetis, a renewable fuels company with operations in the United States and India, is preparing for significant growth in the Indian biodiesel market ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Washington D.C. The company's subsidiary, Universal Biofuels, has established itself as a major player in India's renewable energy sector, generating $112 million in revenues from biodiesel and refined glycerin deliveries in the fiscal year ending September 2024.

Universal Biofuels has already secured $58 million in biodiesel allocations for 2025 from India's government-owned oil refiners and marketing companies, with shipments expected to commence in March. The company is strategically positioning itself for further expansion, including a planned initial public offering (IPO) that could fund increased production capacity.

The potential for growth is substantial, driven by India's National Biofuels Policy, which aims to achieve a 5% biodiesel blend ratio representing approximately 1.2 billion gallons annually. Currently, the implementation stands at only a 1% blend, indicating significant room for market development. Access to renewable oil feedstocks, both domestic and imported, will be crucial in supporting this expansion.

Aemetis CEO Eric McAfee highlighted the environmental and economic opportunities, noting that India's 25 billion gallon per year petroleum-based diesel market contributes significantly to air pollution and health issues. The company sees potential for U.S. agricultural exports, particularly soybean oil, if India reduces its 27.5% import tariff on renewable oil feedstocks.

The strategic timing of this business update coincides with diplomatic discussions between the United States and India, potentially opening new avenues for agricultural and energy cooperation. By positioning itself at the intersection of renewable energy policy and international trade, Aemetis is demonstrating a forward-looking approach to sustainable fuel production and global market expansion.
