The appointment of pulmonary vascular disease expert Bradley A. Maron as editor-in-chief of Circulation signals a commitment to advancing transformative cardiovascular science and introduces new features to enhance clinical relevance and reader engagement.

The American Heart Association has appointed Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, as the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal, effective with today’s issue. Maron, a leading researcher in pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure, will guide the journal's editorial direction and uphold its tradition of publishing rigorous, practice-changing science for clinicians and researchers worldwide.
Maron is a board-certified cardiologist and senior associate dean for precision medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he also directs the Pulmonary Hypertension Center. His research spans basic, translational, and clinical science, with a focus on pulmonary vascular disease and cardiomyopathy. He succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who served from 2004 to 2016.
Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee, emphasized that Maron’s appointment underscores the Association's commitment to advancing transformative science. “His vision, scientific breadth and dedication to robust research and innovation position Circulation for optimal success in its next chapter of influence and impact,” she said.
Maron outlined several new features for the journal, including a Clinician Lighthouse article series for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests, a Clinician’s Corner for practical decision-making, and a Patient’s Corner to present key content to the public. Other enhancements include graphic abstracts, video commentaries, streamlined submission processes, and expanded weekly eTOC alerts with brief summaries.
Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, will serve as executive editor, and Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, as deputy executive editor. Ten deputy editors will oversee specific sections, including Joseph C. Wu, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, for fundamental sciences, and Thomas M. Maddox, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, for AI for process and science.
Maron’s scientific contributions include over 260 publications and six patents. He has led federally funded research for more than two decades, discovering molecular mechanisms of vascular fibrosis and using AI to improve disease phenotyping. His editorial experience includes roles with Circulation, The Lancet, and other major journals.
The American Heart Association publishes 14 peer-reviewed journals, each editorially independent. More information is available at CircAHajournals.org and heart.org.
