Angkor Resources has confirmed Mussel Basin as a fourth drilling target on its Cambodian Block VIII license, representing a structurally distinct prospect with shallower drilling depths and higher potential reservoir porosity compared to previously identified targets.

Angkor Resources Corp. has confirmed Mussel Basin as a fourth target for exploratory drilling based on data processing from its seismic program on Block VIII in Cambodia. The company's seismic data supports expectations that Mussel Basin represents a rift fault bounded basin, probably of Cenozoic age, making it structurally different from the previously identified South Bokor, Central Bokor, and North Bokor basins. This structural difference suggests distinct prospect types that could expand the exploration potential of the license area.
Keith Edwards, Geophysicist for EnerCam, explained the advantages of the Mussel Basin target, noting that drilling targets will be shallower and reservoir porosity may be higher due to less compaction. The team is reviewing data for stratigraphic traps, including reservoirs that pinch out against sealing rock or porous channel sand encased in impermeable shale. These characteristics could potentially improve drilling efficiency and reservoir quality compared to other targets on the block.
The company anticipates completing full seismic interpretation in December with prioritized drill targets, while continuing reprocessing of specific data areas to remove noise for better resolution. Cleaner data helps verify what the seismic data reveals regarding unconformities and more clearly defines targets for drilling. Angkor Resources undertook a 350-line kilometre 2D seismic program over Block VIII, completing the program at the end of September, with processing and interpretation ongoing since then.
Initial data had already identified clear, large four-way closures on South Bokor and Central Bokor, with all three sub-basins on the west side of Block VIII showing anticline structures. The addition of Mussel Basin as a fourth target expands the exploration portfolio and demonstrates the geological diversity within the license area. The company's Cambodian energy subsidiary, EnerCam Resources, was granted an onshore oil and gas license covering just over 4095 square kilometres in southwest Cambodia, with the company actively advancing exploration activities to establish Cambodia as an oil and gas producing nation.
This development matters because it represents progress toward Cambodia's potential emergence as an oil and gas producer, with multiple distinct geological targets now identified within a single license area. The identification of a structurally different basin type suggests varied hydrocarbon potential that could support more comprehensive exploration strategies. The shallower drilling targets and potentially higher reservoir porosity in Mussel Basin could translate to reduced drilling costs and improved production economics if hydrocarbons are discovered. As exploration continues across Block VIII, these findings contribute to understanding Cambodia's petroleum geology while advancing the country's energy independence goals.
