Arkansas Lithium Project Gains Regulatory Approval, Targeting Major Battery Material Production

Standard Lithium, in partnership with Equinor, has achieved a significant regulatory milestone for its South West Arkansas lithium project after receiving unanimous approval from the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission for the Reynolds Unit. The 20,854-acre brine unit represents a critical step toward commercial lithium production in the United States.

The project aims to produce 22,500 tonnes of battery-quality lithium carbonate annually, with commercial output targeted for 2028. This approval marks a crucial advancement in the project's development, setting the stage for a potential final investment decision and royalty rate determination scheduled for May.

Lithium is a critical component in electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage systems, making this project strategically important for domestic battery material production. The United States has been increasingly focused on developing domestic supply chains for critical minerals to reduce reliance on international sources and support the growing electric vehicle and renewable energy sectors.

The Smackover Formation, where the project is located, is recognized as a world-class lithium-brine asset.
