Atlanta Community Food Bank Mobilizes Community During Hunger Action Month Amid Record Food Insecurity

The Atlanta Community Food Bank is rallying community support during Hunger Action Month as food insecurity in America reaches its highest rate in over a decade, affecting over 47 million people including 14 million children. In Georgia specifically, 1 in 7 people and 1 in 5 children face food insecurity, creating an urgent need for intervention. This crisis has been intensified by the largest cuts to SNAP and Medicaid in history, which will soon make food and healthcare less accessible for millions of vulnerable individuals.

Kyle Waide, President & CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, emphasized the critical timing, stating that recent federal program cuts are significantly impacting services and increasing strain on programs serving children, families, and seniors. The organization is leveraging Hunger Action Month to mobilize collective action through multiple engagement opportunities. Throughout September, donations to the Food Bank will be matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000, with each dollar providing up to six meals. The campaign encourages community members to wear orange, the color representing hunger awareness, to draw attention to the cause. On September 9, designated as Hunger Action Day, iconic Atlanta landmarks including 1105 West Peachtree Tower, Atlanta Zoo, and Ponce City Market will illuminate their buildings orange in solidarity. The Food Bank is also running a 30-day social media challenge offering daily action suggestions and promoting volunteer opportunities at their headquarters and Community Food Center locations.

This coordinated effort occurs as Feeding America member food banks nationwide observe Hunger Action Month, with supporters encouraged to use #HungerActionMonth on social media while tagging @FeedingAmerica and @ACFB. The initiative represents a crucial response to worsening hunger conditions, demonstrating how community engagement can help address systemic food access challenges affecting millions of Americans.
