Avon Theatre Groundbreaking Marks Start of Transformative Reconstruction and Expansion in Stamford

The Avon Theatre – Deborah & Chuck Royce Cinema Arts Center held a ceremonial groundbreaking on July 23, 2026, for the Avon Recreated transformation project, marking a pivotal moment in the nonprofit cinema's 87-year history. Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons, alongside community leaders, donors, and supporters, gathered to launch the ambitious reconstruction and expansion that will modernize the historic venue while preserving its cultural legacy.

The project will create one of the Northeast's most technologically advanced independent cinema and arts centers. Planned features include a fully restored historic theatre, three state-of-the-art screening venues, a dedicated Education Center, a Café and Wine Bar, premium stadium seating, and cutting-edge 4K HDR BARCO Laser Projection Systems. The main theatre will feature immersive Dolby Atmos® sound, and the entire complex will undergo comprehensive ADA accessibility improvements. Construction is slated for substantial completion by September 2027, with a grand reopening in late October 2027.

"Today's groundbreaking represents far more than the start of construction—it represents an investment in Stamford's cultural future," said Susan Cullman and Arthur Selkowitz, Board Co-Chairs of the Avon Theatre Board of Directors. "Through Avon Recreated, we are preserving that remarkable legacy while creating a world-class cinema arts center that will serve audiences, students, filmmakers, and families for generations to come."

Executive Director Peter H. Gistelinck emphasized the project's significance: "Avon Recreated is much more than a building project; it is the realization of a bold vision to create an extraordinary destination where film, education, culture, and community intersect." The expansion will enhance the Avon's capacity to present independent, international, documentary, and educational programming, reinforcing its role as Fairfield County's premier nonprofit cinema arts organization.

During construction, the Avon will continue its mission through the Avon on Tour initiative, bringing films and educational programs to venues such as Ferguson Library and The Bruce Museum.
