BAM and Reel Sisters Present Women's History Month Film Showcase Featuring Award-Winning Shorts

The Brooklyn Academy of Music and Reel Sisters are presenting an evening of award-winning short films on March 25, 2026, highlighting diverse women's stories during Women's History Month.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and Reel Sisters are showcasing an evening of notable award-winning and family-centered films on Wed., March 25, 2026 at 7 pm. From the highly acclaimed Superman Doesn't Steal directed by Tamika Lamison to Reel Sisters 2025 Oscar qualifying short Shallow End directed by Maria de la Cruz Rudloff, the collection represents uplifting characters that keep their families intact through life challenges. In Shallow End, Agatha must piece together her life following a lengthy stay in rehab while a married couple in Laundry face the circumstances surrounding their six-year-old son's terrible accident. A delightful elderly woman finds purpose in teaching herself Spanish while overcoming memory issues. Superman Doesn't Steal, set in the 1970s, is a coming-of-age story seen through the eyes of nine-year-old Harriet and her brother whose fascination with superheroes connect audiences with a familiar experience that carries us through a compelling narrative. BAM and Reel Sisters are proud to present a powerful line up of short films in honor of Women's History Month. The program includes Musica Quarantena, an animated short about a little girl's love for her bedridden Papa that inspires a town in lockdown to make music out of their windows. Gloria follows a Chinese woman in her 70s living alone and struggling with her memory who finds new purpose in teaching herself Spanish. Laundry follows Darius and Bree Williams, a couple whose lives are shattered when their six-year-old son Hunter suffers a severe oxygen-depriving accident.
The Knife features Ife, a young Black Irish woman anxiously awaiting her 20-week pregnancy scan, hoping for good news about her baby's health. When the scan reveals unexpected complications, she and her husband are forced to confront a reality that will test their trust in the healthcare system. Superman Doesn't Steal is based on true events and set during the 1970's Atlanta child murders, seen through the eyes of nine-year-old Harriet and her brother who are fascinated with superheroes.
Reel Sisters is presented by African Voices, a non-profit arts organization dedicated to fostering cultural understanding through art, literature and film. Founded in 1997 by African Voices magazine, Reel Sisters is the first Oscar qualifying film festival in the nation devoted to women of color and has showcased 10,000+ films by women of African, Asian, Native American, Indian, Latina and Arabic descent.
