Blue Faery Launches Black History Month Campaign to Combat Liver Cancer Disparities

Blue Faery, a nonprofit organization dedicated to liver cancer awareness, is continuing its annual Love Your Liver campaign during Black History Month, highlighting critical health disparities that disproportionately impact Black and African American populations.

Research indicates that Black/African Americans are 1.5 times more likely to develop liver cancer compared to the general population, underscoring the urgent need for targeted health education and early intervention strategies. The campaign focuses on raising awareness about specific risk factors, including type 2 diabetes and hepatitis C, which can significantly increase the likelihood of liver cancer development.

As part of the initiative, Blue Faery is hosting two free virtual educational workshops featuring prominent medical experts. The first workshop on February 3, 2025, will feature Dr. Cristal Brown, a gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist from UT Health Austin. The second workshop on February 28, 2025, will be led by Dr. Lewis Roberts, a gastroenterologist and liver cancer researcher from the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Brown emphasized the importance of addressing health disparities, stating that understanding risk factors and connecting patients with appropriate healthcare resources is crucial for improving outcomes. The workshops aim to provide community members with comprehensive information about liver cancer risks, management strategies, and proactive health measures.

Blue Faery's comprehensive approach includes not only these educational workshops but also an online Liver Cancer Community for patients and caregivers, and free Patient Resource Guides designed to support individuals navigating liver cancer challenges.

By focusing on education, early detection, and community engagement during Black History Month, Blue Faery seeks to empower individuals with knowledge and resources to better manage their liver health and reduce cancer risks.
