The Bronzeville Trail Task Force is advancing a major urban trail project in Chicago that promises significant health, economic, and cultural benefits for the community, with substantial funding and city support secured.

Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood is set to undergo a significant transformation with the development of the Bronzeville Cultural Trail, an ambitious urban park project aimed at revitalizing a historic area and creating new opportunities for community engagement and wellness.
The Bronzeville Trail Task Force (BTTF) will celebrate a major milestone on National Trails Day, April 26, 2025, highlighting the project's progress and potential impact. The proposed trail will convert the Kenwood 'L' embankment into an elevated park for walking, running, and biking, connecting the community to the lakefront and preserving historical significance related to the Great Black Migration.
Substantial financial support has already been secured for the project. The Mellon Foundation awarded a three-year, $900,000 grant, while the Chicago Community Trust provided $75,000 for predevelopment planning. The City of Chicago has invested $250,000 to assess project feasibility and recently issued a task order for a comprehensive framework plan with a budget of up to $750,000.
The total project cost is estimated at $100 million, comparable to Chicago's Bloomingdale 606 Trail. City and county investments are anticipated to exceed $5.5 million in the initial construction phase. The trail is expected to deliver multiple community benefits, including improved health and wellness opportunities, enhanced economic growth, and preservation of local historical heritage.
By transforming an underutilized urban space into a dynamic public asset, the Bronzeville Cultural Trail represents a significant investment in community infrastructure and quality of life. The project demonstrates a collaborative approach to urban development, involving residential, institutional, and legacy stakeholders in creating a shared vision for neighborhood revitalization.
