CCHR Hosts Event Honoring Purple Heart Recipients, Addresses Veteran Suicide Concerns

The Florida chapter of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) recently hosted its seventh annual event commemorating Purple Heart Day, drawing hundreds of attendees including veterans, active-duty military personnel, and Purple Heart recipients. The event, held at the historic Fort Harrison in Clearwater, Florida, aimed to honor military members who have received the Purple Heart Medal while also addressing pressing concerns about veteran mental health and suicide rates.

The ceremony began with a formal presentation by the MacDill Air Force Color Guard, setting a solemn tone for the evening. Notable speakers included Robert Groover, president of the Florida Veterans Coalition, who led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Father Bob Swick, Senior Chaplain for the Clearwater Police Department, who delivered the invocation.

Commander Mal Clingan, a Purple Heart recipient himself, spoke about the significance of the medal. The featured speaker, Brian Halstead, President of the United States Army Ranger Association, emphasized the importance of community, purpose, and spirituality in facilitating a smooth transition to post-military life. Halstead urged attendees to reach out to veterans, stating, "Being teammates puts an onus on you to try and make your buddies better. So, I implore you to reach out. You and your buddy will be glad you did."

Diane Stein, president of CCHR's Florida chapter, highlighted alarming statistics from the Department of Defense, noting that suicide rates in the Air Force, Navy, and Marines during the first quarter of 2024 surpassed those observed during the pandemic era. Stein expressed concern over the prevalent use of psychiatric drugs as a solution to military and veteran suicide, citing known side effects that include suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

"CCHR continues to fight for alternative solutions to assist our soldiers and veterans," Stein stated, emphasizing the organization's commitment to preventing abuse of those who have served the country.

The event underscored the ongoing challenges faced by veterans and active-duty military personnel regarding mental health and suicide prevention.
