Comcast Expands High-Speed Fiber Broadband to Underserved Northern California Counties

Comcast is set to transform digital connectivity in Northern California's rural communities through a significant fiber broadband network expansion in Butte and Colusa counties. The initiative, supported by a Federal Funding Account (FFA) Grant from the California Public Utilities Commission, aims to bridge the digital divide by providing high-speed internet access to 705 locations that currently lack reliable broadband services.

The project represents a strategic investment in digital infrastructure, targeting 260 locations in Colusa County and 445 locations in Butte County. By 2026, residents and businesses in these areas will gain access to multi-gigabit internet speeds, offering unprecedented opportunities for education, healthcare, and economic development.

State Senator Megan Dahle emphasized the transformative potential of this infrastructure investment, highlighting how improved connectivity can open doors to critical services and opportunities. Andy Pickett, Butte County's Chief Administrative Officer, specifically noted the importance of last-mile broadband investments in improving residents' quality of life.

Comcast's expansion goes beyond mere infrastructure development. The company is committed to digital inclusion through programs like Internet Essentials, which provides low-cost internet and affordable computers to eligible households. Since 2011, this program has connected over 2.2 million Californians, demonstrating a sustained commitment to addressing digital inequity.

The new network promises robust performance, with 99.9 percent reliability and advanced security features. It will support essential community organizations, including hospitals, schools, and emergency services, while offering consumers a comprehensive suite of digital services through Xfinity and NOW brands.
