CPV Renewables has begun construction on a 114 MW wind project in Pennsylvania, repurposing former coal mine land. This marks the company's third project utilizing brownfield sites and highlights the growing trend of renewable energy development in former fossil fuel-dependent regions.

Competitive Power Ventures' (CPV) affiliate, CPV Renewable Power, has announced the commencement of construction on CPV Rogue's Wind, a 114 MW wind project spanning Cambria and Clearfield Counties in Pennsylvania. This development represents a significant step in the company's commitment to renewable energy and land revitalization efforts.
The project, set to be completed in 2026, will be CPV's third venture repurposing former coal mine land into a renewable energy source. It joins the ranks of CPV Maple Hill Solar and CPV Fairview Energy Center, both located in Cambria County, showcasing the company's diverse portfolio of energy generation projects in the region.
Gary Lambert, CEO of CPV, emphasized the company's strong business relationship with Pennsylvania, stating, "With construction beginning on CPV Rogue's Wind, we will soon be able to showcase all three types of generation in our operating portfolio; a testament to how we at CPV envision a reliable, low carbon electric supply needed to drive a responsible energy transition forward."
The project is part of CPV's broader 10 GW pipeline of renewable and dispatchable generation projects, which aims to support the United States' decarbonization goals. Once operational, CPV Rogue's Wind will generate enough electricity to power approximately 32,000 households and reduce CO2 emissions equivalent to removing 28,400 cars from the road annually.
Sean Finnerty, President of CPV Renewables, highlighted the project's significance in revitalizing former industrial areas: "CPV Rogue's Wind highlights our commitment to developing in energy communities where we can have a positive impact. As our third project where we revitalize former coal mine land, we can show how brownfield development helps to bring vital resources to areas that need it most."
The wind farm will consist of 19 Vestas V-162 wind turbines and marks the first project tied to CPV's recent partnership with Harrison Street, an investment management firm focused on alternative real assets. This partnership, in which Harrison Street acquired one-third of CPV Renewables, is expected to accelerate the development of CPV's 4 GW renewable pipeline.
Carolyn Arida, Senior Managing Director at Harrison Street, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "This project exemplifies our commitment to sustainable infrastructure, and we look forward to building on this success and continuing our collaboration with CPV to deliver innovative renewable energy projects across the country."
Beyond its environmental benefits, CPV Rogue's Wind is set to have a significant economic and educational impact on the local community. The project will generate new revenue for local municipalities and create hundreds of jobs during the construction phase. Additionally, it will serve as an educational experience for visitors to the nearby Rock Run Recreation Area, where outdoor enthusiasts can explore trails leading to the base of the project's turbines.
Tom Kakabar, Chair of the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority, praised CPV's involvement, saying, "The professional team at CPV has been a true partner and has pitched another 'perfect game win' for renewable energy development within Cambia County."
As the United States continues its transition towards cleaner energy sources, projects like CPV Rogue's Wind demonstrate the potential for repurposing former industrial sites and creating new economic opportunities in regions historically dependent on fossil fuels. This development not only contributes to reducing carbon emissions but also showcases the evolving landscape of energy production in America.
