With nearly three decades in the industry, Ferrera emphasizes that workflow is as crucial as the device itself.

"In this business, a great idea is only the beginning," Ferrera said. "I've watched devices perform exactly as engineers intended, but still create frustration because they added unnecessary steps during a procedure. That experience taught me that workflow is part of the product."

Stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 795,000 people experience a stroke annually in the United States, with a stroke occurring every 40 seconds. During an untreated ischemic stroke, about 1.9 million brain cells die each minute, underscoring the need for efficient treatment.

Ferrera believes these statistics reinforce the need for practical innovation. "I've learned that physicians don't need more features," he said. "They need tools that fit naturally into the way they already work. Every unnecessary step can have consequences."

At RC Medical, his venture studio model partners with physician-entrepreneurs to identify recurring clinical problems before product development begins. "We always start with one question: 'What keeps happening that shouldn't?'" Ferrera explained. "That's where the strongest opportunities usually begin."

His approach encourages observing procedures rather than assuming needs. "I remember one doctor telling me, 'The device works, but I spend more time preparing it than using it,'" Ferrera said. "That single conversation changed the direction of the project. We simplified the design instead of adding more technology."

Ferrera also stresses early collaboration across engineering, medicine, manufacturing, and regulatory planning. "You cannot treat regulation, manufacturing, or workflow as problems to solve later," he said. "They shape the product from the beginning."

Industry data supports the challenge: many venture-backed startups fail before commercial success, and medical device companies face additional hurdles in demonstrating safety, effectiveness, and adoption. Ferrera hopes more innovators embrace a disciplined approach focused on patient care. "The products that make the biggest difference are often the simplest," he said. "They remove friction. They save time. They help physicians focus on patients instead of equipment."

Ferrera encourages individuals to learn how stroke symptoms are recognized using the FAST method, read about medical device development, and listen to physicians about workflow challenges. He also suggests supporting organizations that fund stroke research and education. "People often think innovation starts with a breakthrough," Ferrera said. "Many times it starts by paying attention to one problem that everyone else has learned to work around."

He hopes this mindset inspires the next generation to build solutions that improve care and make healthcare teams more effective. "Helping physicians do their jobs more efficiently ultimately helps patients," he said. "That's always been the goal."
