Deaf Organizations Fund Awards $100K in Grants to Empower Deaf Communities

The Deaf Organizations Fund (DOF) has announced its 2025 grantees, awarding $100,000 in unrestricted funding to four organizations dedicated to addressing the diverse needs of deaf communities nationwide. The selected organizations—Atomic Hands, Deaf Defy, Inc., DEAFinitely, Inc., and The Black Deaf Project—will utilize the grants to develop accessible educational resources, break down healthcare barriers, and expand opportunities for DeafBlind youth.

In its second Impact Grant cycle, DOF received a record-breaking 84 applications, highlighting the growing recognition of deaf-centric organizations' critical work. The selection process employed a participatory grantmaking approach, with a community-led grant review committee playing a pivotal role in evaluating and recommending recipients.

Sasha Ponappa, Executive Director of DOF, emphasized the organization's trust-based grantmaking philosophy, which provides recipients with the flexibility to allocate funds where they are most needed. This approach represents a significant shift from traditional grant models, empowering deaf-led organizations to drive meaningful change within their communities.

Beyond financial support, DOF is expanding its resources to include grantee coaching, technical assistance, and the development of an accessible training program for deaf organization leaders. The fund is also advocating for disability justice within the philanthropic sector, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to supporting deaf communities.

Since its establishment in 2021, DOF has distributed nearly $500,000 among 27 deaf-centric organizations and programs. The latest grant cycle underscores the fund's commitment to addressing systemic barriers and promoting inclusivity for deaf individuals across the United States.

Zaineb Abdulla, Founder of Deaf Defy, Inc., highlighted the significance of such targeted funding, noting the importance of organizations like DOF that specifically support deaf-led initiatives and prioritize accessible communication, including the use of American Sign Language.

As DOF enters its sixth funding cycle, the organization continues to play a crucial role in amplifying the voices and addressing the unique challenges faced by deaf communities. By providing unrestricted grants and comprehensive support, DOF is helping to create more equitable opportunities and resources for deaf individuals and organizations.
