The South Florida Business Unit of DPR Construction has completed the structural steel topping out phase for Memorial Healthcare System's new 30,000-square-foot freestanding emergency department located at 801 S. Douglas Road in Pembroke Pines. This milestone, achieved in August, marks significant progress on a facility designed to replace the current 24/7 Care Center and substantially expand emergency medical services capacity in the region.

The new facility will feature 20 exam and treatment rooms, a dedicated pediatric treatment area, 16 fast-track exam rooms, comprehensive diagnostic imaging capabilities including x-ray and CT services, and a full-service laboratory to support all diagnostic procedures. According to Shane Strum, Memorial Healthcare System's interim CEO, "This facility is projected to care for approximately 55,000 individuals each year, with room for future growth. Designed to staff adult emergency medical as well as pediatric emergency medical physicians, it is equipped to meet diverse emergency needs and provide essential care to the many communities that trust us with their health."

The construction project, managed by DPR Construction, represents a complex multi-phase development on an active medical campus. Lee Kinzel, a senior project manager at DPR, noted that "The challenges of a multi-phase project on an active campus have enabled the DPR team to incorporate cutting edge Lean construction processes. By applying these techniques, we've been able to maintain momentum and properly plan the job." The project includes completed parking infrastructure and will eventually involve demolishing the existing urgent care building once the new facility becomes operational in May 2026.

This project is part of a broader healthcare expansion initiative, with DPR simultaneously constructing another freestanding emergency department for Memorial in Miramar at Miramar Parkway and Red Road, also scheduled to open in 2026. For both projects, DPR addressed ongoing labor challenges and created greater efficiencies by utilizing their in-house self-perform team for specific construction scopes. The company, celebrating its 20th anniversary in South Florida, employs more than 100 local professionals and handles approximately $260 million in construction projects annually throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties.
