Florida Mental Health Rights Advocates Honored at Annual Humanitarian Awards Banquet

The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) Florida Chapter recently held its annual Humanitarian Awards Banquet, celebrating the achievements of volunteers and supporters in their ongoing mission to reform mental health laws and protect patient rights. The event, which drew hundreds of attendees, highlighted the organization's efforts to address concerns surrounding the Baker Act, Florida's mental health law that allows for involuntary psychiatric examinations.

Since its establishment in 1989, CCHR Florida has been at the forefront of mental health reform, particularly focusing on coercive psychiatric practices. The organization's work has become increasingly crucial in light of alarming statistics: involuntary psychiatric examinations in Florida peaked at over 210,000 in 2018-2019, according to the Department of Children and Families Baker Act Dashboard.

In response to these concerning figures, CCHR launched a campaign in 2016 to educate the public about their rights under the Baker Act and to advocate for legislative changes. Diane Stein, President of CCHR Florida, emphasized the importance of their mission, stating, "We must restore and secure basic freedoms and rights, especially and most importantly, for our next generation... our leaders of tomorrow... mankind's future."

The organization's efforts have yielded significant results. Over the past nine years, CCHR has contributed to the passage of 50 bills aimed at improving the protection of rights and enhancing accountability within Florida's mental health industry. These legislative changes have not only strengthened safeguards against abuse but have also led to a notable decrease in the use of involuntary psychiatric examinations.

At the awards ceremony, CCHR recognized individuals who have made outstanding contributions to their cause. Ms. Kathy Sweigart received the 2024 CCHR Volunteer of the Year Award for her extensive work in educating the public, law enforcement, educators, and other professionals about mental health human rights across Florida.
