Fort Lauderdale Girl Scout Achieves Gold Award for Community Impact

Lilly Gonzalez, a Fort Lauderdale resident, has been honored with the Girl Scout Gold Award for her project 'Garden of Growth,' which tackles the pressing issue of food waste. This prestigious award recognizes the efforts of Girl Scout seniors and ambassadors who devise solutions to real-world problems, demonstrating leadership and commitment to community improvement.

Gonzalez's initiative focused on the environmental, economic, and social impacts of food waste, identifying key factors such as confusion over expiration dates and the dismissal of imperfect produce. By constructing a self-sustaining compost bin at First Presbyterian Church and conducting workshops for over 90 participants, including preschoolers and church members, Gonzalez educated the community on the benefits of composting. Her approach, which included interactive activities and the distribution of an educational guide, aimed to foster a deeper understanding of waste reduction and soil enrichment.

Further extending the project's reach, Gonzalez trained kitchen volunteers in composting techniques and established a system for donating surplus food to a local soup kitchen. Her collaboration with Feeding South Florida ensures the ongoing redistribution of food, highlighting the project's sustainability and long-term community benefits.

Lisa Johnson, CEO of Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida, praised the Gold Award recipients for their innovative and compassionate approaches to addressing contemporary challenges. Gonzalez's achievement is part of a broader recognition of 27 young women in the region, supported by sponsors such as Amazon and Publix Super Market Charities, underscoring the collective effort to empower female leaders in creating positive change.
