Fran Burns: A Lifetime of Leadership in Maryland's Agriculture and Equine Welfare

Fran Burns, a retired sales professional with a deep-rooted passion for agriculture and thoroughbred aftercare, has made significant contributions to Maryland's agricultural heritage and equine welfare. As the President of the Board of Directors of the Maryland State Fair and Agricultural Society, Inc., Burns continues a family tradition, following in the footsteps of her great-grandfather. Her leadership is driven by a commitment to education, community involvement, and the future of farming in the state.

Burns' career spans over 20 years in radio advertising sales, where she earned the Hearst Eagle Award, and later in dental sales with Dentsply, where she was honored as a member of the President’s Club. Beyond her professional achievements, Burns is a dedicated volunteer with the MidAtlantic Horse Rescue, advocating for the rescue and aftercare of off-track thoroughbreds. Her efforts were recognized in 2022 with the Joe Kelly Unsung Hero Award.

At Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore, Burns serves as the Head Tour Guide for Sunrise at Old Hilltop Tours, offering the public a unique behind-the-scenes look at Maryland horse racing and the historic Pimlico Race Track. Under her guidance, the tours saw record attendance during the 150th Preakness, welcoming over 2500 guests. Burns also runs a small boarding operation at her farm, Boxwood Farm, in Monkton, Md., further demonstrating her dedication to the equine community.
