Garuda Indonesia Adopts Piece-Based Baggage Policy, Offering Up to 64 kg

Garuda Indonesia is advancing its service transformation with the introduction of a piece-based checked baggage policy, known as the Piece Concept, offering up to 64 kilograms for eligible passengers. The new policy applies to tickets issued on or after September 1, 2026, for travel commencing on or after that date. Passengers with tickets issued before that date will retain their existing baggage allowance even if traveling after the implementation date.

Under the Piece Concept, baggage allowances are determined by the number of pieces and maximum weight per piece, replacing the previous weight-based system. This change provides passengers with greater clarity and consistency when planning their travel. Depending on the route, travel class, and fare category, passengers may check up to two pieces weighing a maximum of 32 kilograms each, totaling up to 64 kilograms.

Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills stated that the implementation reflects the company's commitment to modernizing services and delivering a more transparent travel experience. “Clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily, from the initial stages of their journey through to departure,” Mills said.

For domestic routes, Economy Class passengers will receive one piece up to 23 kilograms, while Business and First Class passengers receive two pieces up to 32 kilograms each (64 kg total). On international routes, Economy Class passengers receive two pieces up to 23 kilograms each (46 kg total), and Business and First Class passengers receive two pieces up to 32 kilograms each (64 kg total).

Compared to the previous Weight Concept, the new policy increases allowances significantly. For example, domestic Economy Class allowance rises from 20 kg to 23 kg, and international Economy Class from 30 kg to 46 kg. Business and First Class allowances on both domestic and international routes increase from 30-50 kg to 64 kg. Passengers may receive up to 34 kilograms of additional checked baggage allowance, subject to applicable piece and weight limits.

Mills noted that the Piece Concept is widely adopted across the global aviation industry and its implementation at Garuda Indonesia will support service standardization and more efficient baggage handling, including when connecting to international flight networks. To ensure a smooth transition, passengers are encouraged to review the provisions, including baggage allowances based on route, travel class, and fare category, through Garuda Indonesia’s official website at https://www.garuda-indonesia.com/id/en/new-baggage-policy.

The policy will be reviewed and refined based on passenger feedback, reflecting Garuda Indonesia’s commitment to delivering a more convenient and comfortable travel experience. Mills concluded, “Through this modernisation, we aim to provide greater value and a more comfortable and seamless travel experience, while continuing to uphold the highest standards of safety and compliance with applicable aviation regulations.”
