Global Leaders and Youth Launch Next 25 Years of Human Rights Education at UN Summit

Diplomats, educators, judges, legislators, law enforcement leaders, Nobel Peace Prize representatives, artists, and youth delegates from 82 nations gathered at United Nations Headquarters on July 30–31 for the 2026 International Human Rights Summit. The event, themed "Education for Peace: A 25-Year Legacy," celebrated the 25th anniversary of Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) and launched a renewed global commitment to expand human rights education worldwide.

Hosted by YHRI and United for Human Rights, the summit underscored the transformative power of human rights education in building peaceful societies. Dr. Mary Shuttleworth, President of YHRI, challenged participants to turn inspiration into action, stating, "When young people understand their human rights, they become champions for the rights of others." Her call resonated with the more than 550 attendees, who were welcomed by H.E. Ambassador Dionísio de Costa Babo Soares of Timor-Leste, the principal sponsor of the event.

The summit featured prominent voices from international leadership, including Dr. Bertrand Ramcharan, former Acting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; Ambassador Salah S. Hammad of the African Union; and Hon. Dr. José Antonio Michilini, a Federal Judge from Buenos Aires. Their addresses highlighted how human rights education strengthens institutions and fosters trust, particularly in law enforcement and governance. Nobel Peace Prize legacies were also represented, with Dr. Ira Helfand (International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War and ICAN), Dr. Ash Pachauri (IPCC), Dr. Seán P. Duffy (Albert Schweitzer), and Tebogo Joy Ngoma (granddaughter of Desmond Tutu) sharing insights on the lasting impact of peace advocacy.

Three panel dialogues structured the summit's core discussions. "Human Rights Education: A Legacy of Change" honored YHRI volunteers with over a decade of service in teaching the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. "Human Rights Education: Leadership and the Way Forward" brought together professors, NGOs, and law enforcement professionals to share practical experiences. "Human Rights Education: Empowering the Next Generation" showcased youth delegates from across the globe, demonstrating that young people are already leading meaningful change.

The summit also recognized four outstanding individuals for their contributions: Trish Duggan (USA) for using art to promote peace, Professor Ornella Castellano (Italy) for advancing human rights education in schools, Ambassador Ireneo Namboka for a lifetime of diplomatic leadership, and Dr. Vineet Kapoor (India) for integrating human rights education into police training. These honorees exemplify the summit's theme of transforming education into action.

The event highlighted the crucial role of partnerships, with support from the Church of Scientology enabling YHRI to provide free educational materials worldwide. Beth Akiyama, Executive Director of the Church of Scientology National Affairs Office, quoted L. Ron Hubbard: "Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream." This ethos underpins YHRI's mission, which has reached over 100 countries.

As delegates departed, they carried renewed determination to expand human rights education in their communities. The summit marked not just a celebration of past achievements but a launchpad for the next 25 years.
