Hainan's international social media campaign has generated over 16 million exposures, positioning the island as a top-tier resort destination and boosting inbound tourism.
Hainan, China's southern tropical island province, has captured the attention of global travelers through an ambitious international social media campaign. Themed "China's Free Trade Port, World-Class Resort Island: Welcome to Cool Hainan," the initiative has significantly raised the island's profile among potential visitors from key source markets, including Russia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America.
Launched by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province, the campaign published 56 travel-focused pieces of content across multiple social media platforms, amassing over 16 million exposures. The content was distributed in six languages—Russian, Thai, Indonesian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese—reaching a combined audience of more than 52 million followers. This strategic approach ensures that the messaging resonates with diverse cultural and linguistic groups, effectively expanding Hainan's global footprint.
Moving beyond traditional promotional tactics, the campaign delivered seven themed series of Hainan tourism content, each highlighting a unique aspect of the island's offerings. January kicked off with luxury getaways on the Sunshine Coast, setting a tone of upscale relaxation. February showcased the vibrant Li and Miao ethnic Spring Festival customs, offering a glimpse into Hainan's rich cultural heritage. March focused on trendy surfing experiences and aerospace study tours in Wenchang, appealing to adventure seekers and science enthusiasts alike. April highlighted water sports and wellness tourism, while May featured archaeological study tours and rainforest adventures. June promoted self-driving tours through rainforests and visits to ethnic minority villages, and July rolled out "Ten Signature Marine Tourism Routes," with a single post achieving over 2.6 million impressions.
The content not only showcased Hainan's diverse landscapes—pristine bays, lush rainforests, and cultural villages—but also provided practical travel information crucial for international visitors. This included details on visa-free policies for 86 countries, temporary permits for foreign driver's licenses, shopping options, and duty-free and departure tax refund policies. By integrating natural beauty with logistical guidance, the campaign effectively addressed potential barriers to travel, making Hainan more accessible and appealing.
The response from global social media users has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have expressed keen interest in visiting, with specific queries about visa requirements, dining, accommodation, and self-driving itineraries. Several users noted that Hainan has been added to their travel bucket lists, indicating a tangible impact on travel intentions.
According to an official from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province, the campaign is a cornerstone of Hainan's strategy to build an international image as a "World-Class Resort Island." The province aims to enhance its appeal as an inbound tourism destination and support its development into an international tourism and consumption center. "Hainan possesses tropical coastal tourism resources that are unique in China," the official said. "Capitalizing on the policy dividends and openness advantages of the Free Trade Port, we will continue to optimize our tourism services for international visitors and foster a tourism consumption environment that meets international standards."
The "Cool Hainan" campaign marks a significant step in positioning Hainan as a premier global travel destination, leveraging digital platforms to reach a worldwide audience and drive sustainable growth in international tourism.
