Hollywood Neighborhood Cleanup Distributes The Way to Happiness Booklets

On July 18, 2026, a 12-member volunteer team from the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International conducted a neighborhood cleanup in Hollywood, California. The effort, which focused on blocks around the church, aimed to demonstrate positive action inspired by L. Ron Hubbard's book, The Way to Happiness. Volunteers cleaned along Franklin Avenue west to Hollywood Boulevard, then distributed the booklets to tourists and shopkeepers.

The initiative drew enthusiastic responses. One man selling bus tours on Hollywood Boulevard recognized the booklet, saying, "I know this book! I read this when I was in prison. Whenever I would read this book, it would just bring me calm." A coffee shop employee began reading the booklet immediately and requested a stack to place on the counter. An SUV driver passing by rolled down the window and exclaimed, "Did anybody tell you yet today that you guys are awesome?" The volunteers gave the occupants booklets.

Nick Kurtz, the cleanup in-charge, took a proactive approach by offering bundles of a dozen booklets. "I would approach someone and say, 'Hey, do you like to help people?' If they said yes, I would say, 'Well, you can really pay it forward with this book,'" he explained. A family from Riverside accepted booklets as they entered their car, and a initially skeptical woman at a crosswalk also took a bundle after a brief conversation.

The Way to Happiness booklet, written by L. Ron Hubbard, states that "Happiness lies in engaging in worthwhile activities." For over eight years, the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International has donated these booklets for local cleanups. The event highlighted community collaboration, with Mike, a security guard, and Glen from the Hollywood Partnership expressing appreciation. Glen, who mentioned the film "Pay It Forward," received two booklets to share the concept further.
