A new HR.com research report highlights significant skill gaps in human resources and underscores the importance of HR's strategic involvement in driving business performance and transformation.

A recent study by the HR Research Institute has exposed critical challenges facing human resources departments, revealing that strategic involvement is fundamental to organizational success. The comprehensive research demonstrates substantial disparities between HR professionals' perceived importance of key competencies and their actual proficiency levels.
The study found that organizations with robust HR strategies are emerging as industry leaders, showing nearly seven times greater likelihood of allocating substantial time to strategic planning and more than twice the probability of viewing HR as an equal organizational partner. However, significant skill gaps persist across critical competency areas.
Data and analytics represent a particularly noteworthy challenge, with an alarming 46-point gap between recognition of importance and demonstrated proficiency. While 80% of respondents acknowledge HR data and analytics as essential, only 34% believe HR demonstrates the necessary expertise. Similar gaps exist in change facilitation and strategic thinking, where professionals recognize these skills as crucial but struggle to implement them effectively.
The research highlights that merely 38% of HR professionals currently rate their expertise as expert-level. This skills deficit could potentially impede organizational adaptability and strategic responsiveness in an increasingly complex business environment.
Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com, emphasized the urgent need for HR leaders to not only adapt but actively lead transformational change. The study suggests that bridging these skill gaps is pivotal for ensuring both HR and broader business success.
The findings underscore a critical message: HR must evolve from a primarily administrative function to a strategic leadership role. By developing key competencies in data analysis, change management, and strategic thinking, HR departments can position themselves as essential drivers of organizational innovation and performance.
