Japan Creator Support Fund Drives International Breakthroughs for Japanese Creators

The Japan Creator Support Fund, a government-backed initiative under the Agency for Cultural Affairs, is demonstrating tangible international success as it enters its third year. At a progress report meeting held on June 5, 2026, at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Tokyo, organizations supported by the fund presented outcomes from fiscal year 2025, highlighting awards, nominations, co-productions, and expanded global networks across creative industries.

Vice Minister Shigeki Kobayashi opened the meeting by emphasizing that "creators and artists themselves are the source of compelling content," underscoring the government's commitment to nurturing creative talent and fostering international exchange. The fund, administered by the Japan Arts Council, has generated activity across 23 countries and regions, including Asia, Europe, and North America. Key milestones include selections at the Berlin International Film Festival, Cannes Directors' Fortnight, and Annecy International Animation Film Festival, as well as performances at London's Royal Opera House.

Four organizations presented their projects. The Japan Performing Arts Solidarity Network's SOIL Fellowship Program sent participants to pitching events in London and Edinburgh to enhance global visibility of Japanese theatre. Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre's TMT Gear project involved overseas on-the-job training and 8K recording initiatives. KINEMA CIRTUS reported on the Global Anime Challenge, which included internships at overseas animation studios. Jikei Gakuen School Corporation's Immersive Media Lab++ focused on curriculum foundations and overseas research visits, with plans for year-round courses starting in FY2026.

Notable achievements include the National Ballet of Japan being named Outstanding Company at the UK's National Dance Awards 2025 after its performances at the Royal Opera House, marking the first time a Japanese ballet company received this honor. In animation, Hanarokushō ga Akeru Hi ni was selected for the Competition section of the Berlin International Film Festival, and Housenka competed at Annecy. The short film Eri was chosen for Directors' Fortnight at Cannes. These successes build on the fund's support for creator development programs.

Looking ahead, FY2026 will see expanded activities: Kichijitsu Saikai at Taiwan's Beitou Art Festival, performances of WITH LiMBO in Slovakia, and Syuto Kanazawa's exhibition in Venice. The fund's website provides updates on selected organizations, events, and creator profiles at https://creator.ntj.jac.go.jp. The progress report underscores the fund's role in positioning Japanese creators on the global stage, with 544 creators supported in FY2025 and nearly 874,000 attendees at domestic and international events.
