Kotobuki Seating Transforms Delacorte Theater with Inclusive Design

Kotobuki Seating International has completed a comprehensive seating overhaul for The Delacorte Theater in Central Park as part of an $85 million revitalization project for The Public Theater's Free Shakespeare in the Park venue. The collaboration with Ennead Architects and Fisher Dachs Associates Theater Planning and Design resulted in 1,864 new seats that represent a significant advancement in outdoor theater seating technology and inclusive design principles.

The renovation project focused on modernizing the 63-year-old theater with particular emphasis on improving experience and accessibility for all patrons. Kotobuki's seating system addresses multiple design challenges unique to the open-air venue while maintaining the theater's architectural integrity. The company engineered XL seats measuring 27 inches wide that are visually identical to standard seats, ensuring patrons of all sizes receive equitable accommodation without stigmatization. Sixteen of these inclusive seats were seamlessly integrated throughout the theater.

Technical innovations include the adaptation of Kotobuki's AURA Chair with custom quiet-rise functionality specifically designed for outdoor use. This development minimizes noise disruption during performances, preserving the acoustic intimacy essential for live theater. The seating also features enhanced donor recognition through custom-sized plaques that improve legibility while honoring the theater's philanthropic supporters. Audience comfort received substantial upgrades through the elimination of outdated 18-inch seats in favor of wider 19- to 22-inch options with ergonomic refinements engineered to withstand Central Park's seasonal weather extremes.

Accessibility improvements represent a cornerstone of the project, with ADA-accessible seats more than doubling to 34 locations throughout the theater. This expansion directly supports The Public Theater's mission of providing free and equitable access to cultural programming. According to Keiko Fukasawa Sutton, CEO of Kotobuki, the company approaches seating as an architectural component integral to spatial and cultural experience rather than mere furniture. The design solution required balancing technical precision with aesthetic sensitivity to create a system that embodies inclusivity, comfort, and longevity.

The seating upgrades constitute one of the most visible improvements for audiences attending performances at the revitalized venue. Combined with Ennead's new façade crafted from reclaimed redwood water towers, rebuilt lighting towers, and expanded backstage facilities, the new seating underscores the design team's commitment to resilience, sustainability, and inclusivity. Cathleen Bachman, Principal at Fisher Dachs Associates, noted that Kotobuki's innovative Aura chair design enhanced both accessibility and comfort while establishing new standards for outdoor seating.

Patrick Willingham, Executive Director of The Public Theater, emphasized that the Delacorte revitalization reconceives the entire audience experience rather than simply restoring the existing structure. The theater reopened in July 2025 with a production of Twelfth Night directed by Saheem Ali, marking the inauguration of a new chapter for the cultural institution with seating designed to support equitable access to free theater for all New Yorkers.
