A new report highlights 23 flagship desalination projects across Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Brazil, representing billions in investment to address water scarcity and sustainability challenges in the region.

The "Desalination Projects Latin America" report provides an exclusive overview of 23 flagship desalination initiatives across Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Brazil, highlighting significant investments aimed at enhancing water security and sustainability. These projects collectively represent a strategic response to growing water scarcity challenges, with implications for industrial operations, urban water supply, and regional resilience. The analysis underscores how desalination is becoming a critical component of infrastructure planning in water-stressed areas.
In Chile, the El Abra Mill Project, developed by Freeport-McMoRan and Codelco with an investment of US $7.5 billion, will expand production through a concentrator and a seawater desalination plant with a capacity of 500 liters per second. Another significant Chilean initiative is the Desalination Plant in Coquimbo Region, led by the Ministry of Public Works with a US $350 million investment, which will deliver a 1,200 l/s plant to supply potable water to Coquimbo and La Serena. These projects reflect Chile's proactive approach to securing water resources for both mining and municipal needs.
Peru's Tía María Copper Project, developed by Southern Copper Corp with a US $1.8 billion investment, features a 235 l/s seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant that will supply water exclusively for mining processes, supported by comprehensive pumping, storage, and transport infrastructure. In Mexico, the Los Cabos project in Baja California Sur involves an US $85 million state-of-the-art desalination plant with a 250 l/s capacity designed to meet growing water demand sustainably. Brazil's Ceará Seawater Desalination Plant, developed by Cagece with a US $620 million investment, will supply potable water to over 720,000 people in Fortaleza, standing as a flagship water resilience project in the country's semi-arid northeast region.
As part of the broader 2026 desalination agenda, the report also announces two exclusive technical site visits in Spain for professionals seeking to strengthen their expertise in advanced desalination techniques. These visits will take place in Murcia and Llobregat, where participants will gain first-hand insight into operating facilities and cutting-edge processes. The Technical Visit to the AcuaMed Desalination Plant in Murcia is scheduled for May 13–14, while the Technical Visit to the ATL Desalination Plant in Llobregat will occur on September 22–23. Professionals interested in participating may request further information through the provided channels.
