Majority of Americans Delay Medical Care Due to Financial Constraints, New Study Reveals

A recent survey conducted by ADAP Advocacy exposes the profound financial challenges facing American patients, revealing that medical debt is preventing a significant portion of the population from accessing essential healthcare services.

The study, which gathered responses from 673 participants nationwide, uncovered alarming trends in patient healthcare avoidance and financial burden. Approximately 77% of respondents reported delaying or avoiding medical care due to financial constraints, while 71% indicated they have similarly postponed obtaining prescription medications.

Medical debt is not merely an abstract concern but a tangible burden for most surveyed patients. Seventy-four percent of respondents confirmed holding medical debt, with hospitals (39%) and specialty care physicians (22%) being the primary creditors. Even more concerning, 66% of those with medical debt reported having their debt in collections, and 40% noted negative impacts on their credit scores.

The financial strain of medical expenses extends beyond credit implications, with 70% of respondents indicating that medical debt directly affected their health status. This suggests a dangerous cycle where financial limitations prevent necessary medical care, potentially exacerbating existing health conditions.

Brandon M. Macsata, CEO of ADAP Advocacy, emphasized the systemic nature of this crisis, particularly critiquing how hospital systems utilize the 340B Drug Pricing Program. The program, intended to expand affordable healthcare access, appears to be underutilized for its original purpose.

These findings underscore the urgent need for comprehensive healthcare affordability reforms and strategies to mitigate the growing medical debt crisis affecting millions of Americans across various chronic health conditions.
