Mars and Unreasonable Group Select 14 Ventures to Transform Food System Sustainability

Mars Snacking and Unreasonable Group have welcomed fourteen purpose-led ventures to the Unreasonable Food collaboration, representing the next frontier of sustainability advancements in the food system. The 2025 cohort builds upon work started in 2024 with a strategic focus on reducing dairy cattle emissions, scaling sustainable ingredients, and exploring solutions for sustainable colors. This initiative addresses the pressing need to evolve our food system as one of the most practical levers for building a more resilient future and thriving economy.

Amanda Davies, Chief R&D, Procurement and Sustainability Officer for Mars Snacking, emphasized the collaborative nature of this effort, stating that addressing food system challenges requires connecting brilliant minds behind pioneering ventures with scaled industry leaders. The selected ventures include companies like Alpine Bio, which engineers crops to produce dairy proteins without cows, and Standing Ovation, producing animal-free casein via precision fermentation for authentic dairy textures. Other participants such as Oobli harness sweet proteins from plants to create sugar-like taste without sugar, while Debut Biotechnology ferments high-value ingredients including natural color alternatives to replace unsustainable or synthetic sources.

The program demonstrates tangible results from its inaugural cohort, which reported nearly $200 million in additional revenue, 140,000 tons of CO₂e avoided, 310 million liters of water conserved, and 1.14 million kilograms of food sold. These ventures reached 24 million more people with safe, nutritious food and educated 2 million people on climate change mitigation while improving working conditions across communities. Daniel Epstein, CEO of Unreasonable Group, expressed honor in welcoming these entrepreneurs, noting their work reflects shared ambition to evolve the food system in sustainable and inclusive ways through mentorship, stakeholder convening, and opportunity surfacing.

The collective 2024 and 2025 ventures will engage with Mars teams across the enterprise, Unreasonable Food mentors, and a global investor network to further support their culture-changing work centered on transforming food supply chains and shaping the future of food.
