Marshfield Coastal Academy Symposium Fosters Future Maritime Leaders

The Atlantic Resiliency Innovation Institute (ARII) recently concluded its Marshfield Coastal Academy symposium, a week-long event designed to immerse 8th and 9th grade students in the complexities of coastal resiliency and maritime careers. The symposium, led by Director Jeffrey Granatino and Lead Instructor Jim DeMaggio, offered hands-on experiences and discussions with professionals, aiming to inspire young minds to consider future roles in environmental and coastal management fields.

Participants explored various aspects of coastal resilience, including tours of the Cape Cod Canal and the Massachusetts State House, where they discussed coastal legislation with South Shore legislators. The event also featured visits to significant coastal projects and meetings with industry executives, providing a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities in maritime professions.

Granatino emphasized the symposium's dual focus on education and empowerment, noting the importance of nurturing future leaders in coastal protection. The success of the June symposium follows a similarly impactful event in April, with plans underway for a fall cohort aimed at high school graduates. This initiative underscores ARII's commitment to addressing coastal hazards through education and innovation, preparing students to contribute to the resilience of shoreline communities.
