Maryland's New Community Solar Farm Marks First Step in 16.6MW Renewable Energy Portfolio

Maryland's Baltimore region has activated a new 2.9-megawatt direct current solar farm developed by TurningPoint Energy and owned by Pivot Energy, representing the first operational facility in a six-project portfolio totaling 16.6 megawatts. The project, which completed construction this summer, will generate approximately 4.25 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy annually, enough to power the equivalent of up to 370 Maryland homes. This development plays a crucial role in helping Maryland achieve its ambitious goal of 50% renewable electricity by 2030, contributing significantly to the state's clean energy transition.

The solar farm operates under Maryland's innovative Community Solar Energy Generating System Pilot Program, which expands access to clean, affordable energy for Baltimore Gas & Electric customers. Subscribers to this community solar farm will save an average of 10% off their electricity bill each year, demonstrating the program's dual benefits of environmental sustainability and economic savings for local residents. The project has already achieved full subscription with 11 unique participants, including a local church, indicating strong community support for shared renewable energy solutions.

Beyond energy generation, the project incorporates sustainable land management practices including sheep grazing, native pollinator planting, and other efforts to ensure long-term land productivity. The development partners have committed to meaningful community investments, with TurningPoint Energy and Pivot Energy jointly investing $120,000 in local organizations through this broader portfolio. Recipients include the Autism Society of Maryland, Community Action Council of Howard County, Howard County Conservancy, and several local school PTAs, creating lasting social value by supporting essential community services.

Howard County Councilmember Deb Jung emphasized the importance of local energy production, noting that county zoning regulations have been updated to be among the most solar-friendly in the state. The project's community impact extends beyond energy savings, with Pivot Energy contributing $18,000 to the Maryland Fuel Fund specifically to help keep 72 Maryland households connected to essential energy services. This comprehensive approach to community solar demonstrates how renewable energy projects can simultaneously address environmental goals, economic benefits, and social support systems while advancing Maryland's clean energy transition.
