Michigan's Upper Peninsula Tourism Drives $1.6 Billion Economic Boost in 2023

Tourism continues to be a critical economic driver for Michigan's Upper Peninsula (UP), generating $1.6 billion in visitor spending during 2023, representing a 7.7% increase from the previous year, according to a recent economic impact analysis by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

The report reveals substantial economic contributions across multiple counties, with Mackinac County leading visitor spending at $309.4 million, followed by Marquette County at $268.3 million. The tourism sector's growth is particularly noteworthy in counties like Menominee, which experienced an 11.8% year-over-year increase in visitor spending.

Lodging and overnight stays were significant contributors, accounting for $484 million in spending, with Mackinac County generating the highest lodging revenue at $116.5 million. Dining experiences and outdoor recreation also saw substantial investment, with recreation activities totaling $351.9 million and food and beverage services generating significant revenue.

Beyond direct spending, tourism has become a vital employment sector in the UP, supporting 11,643 direct jobs and a total of 17,049 tourism-related positions. This represents approximately 11% of the region's total workforce, with counties like Mackinac and Keweenaw experiencing particularly high tourism employment rates.

The economic benefits extend to labor income and tax revenue, with tourism generating $392.3 million in direct wages and $654.8 million in total labor income. Visitor spending contributed $170.9 million in state and local tax revenue, supporting public services and infrastructure development.

Tourism leaders anticipate continued growth by expanding tourism offerings, enhancing outdoor experiences, and promoting sustainable travel. The sector's resilience and economic significance position the Upper Peninsula as an increasingly attractive destination for travelers nationwide.
