The American Heart Association launches a new initiative to standardize and promote effective surgical treatments for intracerebral hemorrhage, aiming to reduce the high mortality rate associated with hemorrhagic strokes.

Nationwide Initiative Aims to Improve Surgical Outcomes for Hemorrhagic Stroke Patients

The American Heart Association has initiated a nationwide effort to enhance surgical treatment protocols for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), a condition responsible for over 40% of stroke-related deaths despite accounting for only 13% of stroke cases in the U.S. The Hemorrhagic Stroke Surgical Quality Improvement Initiative, supported by Stryker, focuses on adopting minimally invasive techniques like minimally invasive parafascicular surgery (MIPS) to improve patient recovery outcomes.

Research indicates that MIPS, when performed within 24 hours of a brain bleed, may lead to better recovery outcomes at six months compared to standard treatments. Dr. Kevin Sheth, a key figure in the initiative, emphasizes the importance of data sharing and accelerated learning in improving stroke care. Fifteen hospitals across the U.S. will participate in a learning collaborative to analyze ICH care data and clinical workflows, identifying successful models for national scaling.

Selected hospitals include Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic, and Yale-New Haven Hospital, among others, chosen for their leadership in MIPS and readiness to expand ICH surgical options. This initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing the lack of standardized surgical treatment protocols for hemorrhagic strokes, potentially saving thousands of lives annually.
