Jo Ann Tilton's new book, Today, I Bought Bananas, provides a firsthand account of widowhood and offers support to widows and those who care for them.

Jo Ann Tilton, a widow, grief-support leader, and Insurance Coordinator for Katy Independent School District, has released her new book, Today, I Bought Bananas, through Clay Bridges Press. The book addresses a critical gap in resources for widows by offering a candid, personal account of life after the death of a spouse, written from what Tilton calls "heart knowledge" rather than mere academic understanding.
Tilton's journey into widowhood began with the unexpected death of her husband, a fallen firefighter. In her search for guidance, she found only grief books written by authors with professional expertise but no personal experience. "When I became a widow, I went looking for a 'how-to' book," Tilton said. "All I found were grief books written by very educated authors who had a lot of head knowledge, but no heart knowledge. You only gain heart knowledge by walking the path." This unmet need inspired her to write the book she wished she had found.
Today, I Bought Bananas explores the loneliness, uncertainty, and ordinary moments that take on new significance after a spouse's death. Even routine tasks like buying groceries can highlight how dramatically life has changed. "This book is about real happenings from a real widow who has lived the experience," Tilton said. "I hope widows will know they are not alone in their feelings, and I hope others will understand the widows in their lives better."
Tilton's professional experience reinforces her personal insights. As Insurance Coordinator for Katy Independent School District, she has supported hundreds of widows through life insurance claims, giving her a unique perspective on both the emotional and practical challenges families face. She is also the founder and leader of 'The Journey Girls,' a widow-support group of approximately 40 women who meet regularly for friendship, encouragement, faith, and community. Through this group, Tilton helps women navigate widowhood without walking it alone.
Her Christian faith is central to her life and work. Tilton describes her writing journey in three simple words: "God guides me." She seeks to point others toward Christ through her words, compassion, and example.
Although Today, I Bought Bananas speaks directly to widows, it also offers valuable insight to relatives, friends, church leaders, and community members who want to better understand and support the widows in their lives. Tilton's message is clear: You are not alone. Healing may not happen all at once, but it is possible to continue moving forward one day, one step, and one small moment at a time.
