Nonprofit Launches 5th Annual Campaign to Raise Awareness of Postpartum Psychosis

Cherished Mom, a national nonprofit organization focused on maternal mental health, will host its 5th Annual Pregnancy & Postpartum Psychosis (PPP) Awareness Day on May 2, 2025, to highlight a critical and often misunderstood psychiatric emergency affecting new mothers.

Postpartum psychosis is a severe perinatal mood and anxiety disorder that can emerge suddenly after childbirth, characterized by hallucinations, delusions, confusion, and rapid mood changes. While relatively rare, occurring in 1-2 per 1,000 deliveries, the condition carries significant risks, including a 5% suicide rate and a 4% infanticide rate.

Kristina Dulaney, founder and executive director of Cherished Mom, emphasized the human impact behind these statistics, noting that increased awareness, education, and advocacy can prevent unnecessary tragedies and support mothers experiencing this challenging condition.

The organization's campaign aims to break the stigma surrounding maternal mental health by encouraging individuals, healthcare providers, and community partners to share educational resources and amplify understanding of postpartum psychosis. Early identification and appropriate intervention are crucial, as timely treatment can lead to successful recovery.

By drawing attention to this serious condition, Cherished Mom hopes to ensure that mothers receive the support and medical attention they need during a vulnerable period, ultimately protecting both maternal and infant health.
