A recent study by Debt.com shows a significant increase in the number of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, highlighting growing financial pressures and potential early signs of an economic downturn.

The financial stability of American households is under increasing strain, with 69% of adults now living paycheck to paycheck, according to the latest annual budgeting survey by Debt.com. This marks a four-year peak and a notable rise from 60% the previous year, despite the fact that over 86% of Americans maintain a monthly budget. The decline in budgeting rates, the first since 2018, is seen by experts as a potential early warning of an economic downturn.
Don Silvestri, President of Debt.com, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "Budgeting remains vital—but it’s clear it’s no longer enough." The survey also uncovered gender disparities in financial struggles, with 72% of women reporting paycheck-to-paycheck living compared to 65% of men, and highlighted differing reasons for not budgeting between genders.
Silvestri called for stronger financial tools and support systems, urging action from policymakers and employers to address the growing crisis. "Americans are doing their part," he said, "but the numbers show that’s no longer enough."
