Rare 1953 Volkswagen Beetle with Oval Window Joins Ron Sturgeon Collection

The Ron Sturgeon Collection at the DFW Car & Toy Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, has added a rare 1953 Volkswagen Beetle, a model that represents a significant transitional period in the evolution of the world's most iconic car. This particular Beetle is an early example of the "oval window" design, produced for only a few months, making it the lowest production year of its kind.

The 1953 model bridged the gap between the earlier split-window Beetles and the more streamlined versions that followed. Early 1953 models, often referred to as "Zwitters," shared features with previous generations, but this example is a true oval, distinguished by its clean oval-shaped rear window and period-correct mechanical details. This rarity and its historical significance make it a standout piece for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Under the rear hood, the Beetle is powered by a 1131cc 25-horsepower flat-four engine, dressed with all the correct components for the era, including a Solex 1-barrel carburetor, strap-over air filter, big-nut generator, 6-volt system, round voltage regulator, and flat-top distributor. Power is delivered through a split-case four-speed transaxle, staying true to original factory specifications. The car is finished in a dignified shade of grey and is described as one of the finest surviving examples of the 1953 oval Beetle, running and driving smoothly while telling a compelling story of innovation and global rebirth after World War II.

This 1953 Volkswagen Beetle is now on display among more than 200 rare automobiles and 3,000 vintage toys and pop culture artifacts at the museum, which is located at 2550 McMillan Parkway in North Fort Worth. The museum, formerly known as DFW Elite Toy Museum, was founded by Sturgeon in the 1980s and has become a destination for car and toy enthusiasts. The new facility spans 150,000 square feet and offers free parking and admission, secure climate-controlled car storage, and event spaces for car clubs and meetings. The museum is dog-friendly and encourages photography, operating Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
