The DFW Car & Toy Museum features a rare 1967 Tatra 2-603 luxury sedan, highlighting its advanced engineering and historical significance as a Cold War-era vehicle reserved for Communist officials.

The DFW Car & Toy Museum is now showcasing an exceptionally rare 1967 Tatra 2-603, a luxury sedan that exemplifies Cold War innovation and the hidden genius of Czechoslovakian engineering. Part of the Ron Sturgeon Collection, this vehicle is one of the most fascinating automotive artifacts from a period when Eastern Bloc manufacturers produced unconventional yet advanced automobiles.
Built in Kopřivnice, Czechoslovakia, the Tatra 603 was produced from 1956 to 1975 and was never intended for public sale. Instead, it was reserved for high-ranking Communist Party officials and government leaders, making it both a symbol of prestige and an exclusive piece of automotive history. This particular 1967 model is a second-series Tatra 2-603, produced between 1964 and 1967, and features the signature four-headlight front fascia, chrome trim, Dagmar-style bumper overriders, anchor-shaped hood ornamentation, and a split rear window that make it unmistakable.
Under its sculpted rear bodywork lies an air-cooled 2.5-liter V8 engine mounted behind the rear axle, a rare configuration for luxury sedans of the era. The engine has been recently overhauled and delivers power through a column-shifted four-speed transaxle. The car's engineering includes advanced unibody construction, MacPherson strut front suspension, swing axles in the rear, and hydraulic drum brakes on all four wheels, placing it ahead of many 1960s luxury automobiles.
Inside, the cabin blends elegance with purposeful simplicity, featuring a classic Blaupunkt push-button radio and a two-spoke steering wheel framing a 180 km/h speedometer. Having been relocated to the Netherlands during the 1980s, this Tatra has traveled just over 46,000 kilometers (approximately 29,000 miles), making it an exceptionally well-preserved survivor.
"The Tatra 603 demonstrates that groundbreaking automotive engineering wasn't limited to Western Europe," said Ron Sturgeon. "Its innovative design, advanced technology, and remarkable history make it one of the most interesting vehicles in our collection." The car is part of a larger exhibit at the DFW Car & Toy Museum, which features over 200 rare, classic, vintage, and exotic vehicles alongside more than 3,000 collectible toys. Admission is free, and the museum is located at 2550 McMillan Parkway, Fort Worth, TX 76137.
This rare Tatra 2-603 offers visitors a unique glimpse into Cold War-era automotive history, showcasing how innovation thrived even behind the Iron Curtain. Its presence at the museum underscores the importance of preserving such engineering marvels for future generations.
