Renaissance BioScience Corp. has been selected as a winner of the inaugural Foodtech Frontier Award program by the Canadian Food Innovation Network (CFIN). This new national initiative spotlights 10 established and 25 rising star high-growth Canadian food technology companies positioned to transform the food industry across Canada and in global markets. The Foodtech Frontier program celebrates the most innovative and impactful food technology companies in Canada, with Renaissance recognized for its strong track record in developing innovative yeast-based solutions to address important food, beverage and flavor industry challenges.
The company has demonstrated extensive food innovation capabilities, creating non-GMO patented products for license to global food industry partners. This includes its acrylamide-reducing yeast and an entire suite of alcoholic beverage yeasts that have been licensed or sold to global industrial partners. In 2024, Renaissance further strengthened its position by receiving a multi-year project grant from CFIN's FoodTech Next program to develop yeast-based technology aimed at improving the flavor of plant-based proteins, addressing a significant challenge in the growing plant-based food sector.
Currently, Renaissance is collaborating with one of the largest global confectionary companies to develop technology that produces natural flavors from yeast as clean label flavor substitutes for chemical-based flavors. This novel approach not only reduces manufacturing costs and appeals to consumers seeking natural ingredients but also offers environmental advantages compared to traditional methods of growing and harvesting fruit to extract natural flavor compounds. The technology represents a significant advancement in sustainable food production methods.
Dr. John Husnik, Renaissance's CSO and Co-CEO, expressed that the team is honored to be selected as one of Canada's inaugural Foodtech Frontier Rising Stars. He noted that this recognition reflects the company's commercial achievements and technology expertise, while acknowledging the importance of being listed alongside other innovative companies advancing Canada's food industry. The support from CFIN has been instrumental in advancing Renaissance BioScience's work in food innovation, according to company leadership. The Canadian Food Innovation Network serves as a national non-profit organization that sparks innovation by connecting Canadian foodtech leaders, entrepreneurs, and researchers, with more information available at https://cfin-rcia.ca.
