Rockwood Motor Court's induction into Historic Hotels of America underscores the importance of preserving Route 66's cultural heritage as the historic highway approaches its centennial anniversary.

Rockwood Motor Court in Springfield, Missouri, has been inducted into Historic Hotels of America®, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation for recognizing and promoting historic hotels in the United States. This induction places Rockwood among more than 300 hotels and resorts nationwide recognized for preserving historic integrity, architecture, and ambiance. Lawrence Horwitz, Executive Vice President of Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide, stated the organization is delighted to induct this Route 66 rock masonry court built in 1929, commending owners Phyllis Ferguson and Tim Phillips for their preservation work that allows future generations to experience this unique destination.
The selection criteria for Historic Hotels of America require a hotel to be at least 50 years old, designated as a National Historic Landmark or listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and recognized for historic significance. Rockwood Motor Court's induction coincides with preparations for Route 66's centennial anniversary in 2026. Hailed by John Steinbeck as the "Mother Road," Route 66 represents a pivotal moment in American history symbolizing the rise of the automobile, freedom, and mobility. Despite its fame, elements of Route 66 are lost annually, making destinations like Rockwood Motor Court crucial for embodying the road's cultural essence and reminding future generations of the era when road trips dominated national consciousness.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation has actively worked to revitalize Route 66 through grants and advocacy, making Rockwood's induction particularly significant for its enduring connections to the historic highway. Built in 1929, Rockwood Motor Court exemplifies early Route 66 tourist-court style with cottages around a central courtyard. In 1948, wood lap siding was covered with giraffe-style masonry and sandstone façade, leading to the name "Rockwood Motor Court," which it has maintained for over 75 years. A 2019 restoration by Ferguson and Phillips provided authentic Route 66 lodging, and today, Rockwood is recognized as the oldest operating motel on Route 66.
