Shangcheng District in Hangzhou, China, is positioning itself as a global leader in digital innovation while preserving its rich cultural heritage. On June 1, the Google Cross-border E-commerce Acceleration Center announced its upcoming settlement in the district, marking a milestone in building a world-class digital hub. This initiative aims to support local enterprises in expanding into global markets, as confirmed by the district government's information office.

Home to the ruins of the Southern Song imperial city, Shangcheng has been the core of Hangzhou since the Sui and Tang dynasties. The district has advanced the inheritance of Song-style culture, creating an open-air museum and launching cultural tourism routes themed on Song aesthetics. Qinghefang Historical and Cultural Characteristic Block retains Ming and Qing architectural layouts, with traditional establishments like Hu Qing Yu Tang Chinese Pharmacy and Wang Xing Ji fan craftsmanship still thriving.

Scientific and technological innovation drives Shangcheng's high-quality development. In 2025, the district launched the construction of a Central Innovation District (CID) covering 122 square kilometers, transforming from a traditional commercial center into an AI-powered innovation ecosystem. A ten-billion-yuan industrial fund supports AI and embodied intelligence enterprises, and the district boasts over 420,000 talents, including 50,000 college graduates under 35. Its commercialization index for scientific achievements ranks among the top in Zhejiang Province.

Innovation platforms have flourished, such as Xizi Smart Industrial Park, renovated from old workshops. It hosts over 30 humanoid robot enterprises, and the Zhejiang Humanoid Robot Training Base opened in early 2026, where robots are deployed in factories and daily scenarios, with breakthroughs in motion control and environmental perception.

International consumption is booming, driven by the integration of culture and technology. Hubin Pedestrian Street, adjacent to West Lake, attracts 40 million annual visits and houses over 1,200 brands, with digital applications enhancing consumer experiences. Sijiqing Fashion Street, a major garment hub, is transforming into an international tourist destination, leveraging digital design and flexible manufacturing to reshape supply chains. Original designer brands and trendy cultural venues inject youthful vitality.
