The Skanska-FlatironDragados Joint Venture has been awarded a $1 billion contract by the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority to construct the Long Bridge North Project, a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing freight and passenger rail services in the Capital Region.

The Skanska-FlatironDragados Joint Venture has been selected by the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) to undertake the $1 billion Long Bridge North Project, marking a significant step forward in the expansion and modernization of rail infrastructure in the Washington D.C. area. This project involves the construction of a one-mile rail link from East Potomac Park to Washington D.C.’s L’Enfant Interlocking, replacing the existing two-track system with a four-track corridor to accommodate increased freight and passenger rail services.
As part of the broader 1.8-mile Long Bridge Project, the initiative aims to replace aging infrastructure with modern rail bridges and corridors, significantly improving transportation networks. The eastern tracks will primarily serve CSX Transportation, Inc. freight rail, while the newly constructed western tracks will focus on passenger services, including Amtrak Virginia, Amtrak’s long-distance service, and Virginia Railway Express (VRE).
Michael Viggiano, executive vice president of Skanska USA Civil, expressed pride in leading the construction team for a project that promises to transform rail service in the Capital Region. Jim Schneiderman of FlatironDragados highlighted the collaborative effort to minimize construction risks and ensure schedule and cost certainty. Construction is scheduled to commence in July 2025, with completion expected by the fourth quarter of 2030.
The project is a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, including CSXT, Amtrak, VRE, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), the National Park Service (NPS), and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), underscoring its importance to regional and national transportation infrastructure.
