Survey Reveals High Concern Over Asbestos in Homes, Yet Testing Remains Rare

A new national survey commissioned by Asbestos Claims.Law has uncovered a significant disconnect between the concern over asbestos in homes and the actual testing for this hazardous material. With 91% of homeowners reporting they have never tested their home for asbestos, the survey reveals a modern real estate risk that could be affecting millions. The findings show that 35% of prospective homebuyers would walk away from a deal if asbestos was discovered, underscoring the material's impact on real estate decisions.

The survey also sheds light on the generational differences in awareness and concern regarding asbestos, with Millennials and Gen Z showing the highest levels of concern, yet Gen Xers being the most likely to walk away from a purchase if asbestos is found. Despite these concerns, testing for asbestos remains rare, even after events that could disturb the material, such as renovations or natural disasters. The lack of federal mandates for asbestos testing in real estate transactions or renovations leaves a legal grey area, with many unaware of the potential health risks.

Asbestos, a known carcinogen, poses serious health risks, including mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos exposure.
