A new survey shows 82% of dental patients prioritize easy sharing of records between providers, with half having repeated tests due to inaccessible records, highlighting the urgent need for open data standards in dentistry.

A recent survey of 300 dental patients conducted by Vyne Dental reveals that 82.34% consider easy sharing of their dental records and x-rays between providers important or very important. This finding underscores growing patient expectations for seamless information exchange in dental care. The data indicates significant practical consequences when interoperability fails: 50.3% of patients reported having to repeat dental tests or x-rays because their new dentist lacked access to previous records.
The survey results emerge as pressure mounts on the dental industry to advance toward open data standards that enable free access, use, and sharing of information across platforms without restrictive barriers. While the medical industry has adopted a new interoperability framework to support seamless exchange across providers, EHRs, and technology platforms, dentistry has lagged behind in achieving this critical objective. Nick Rodich of Vyne Dental emphasized that open data benefits both patients and providers by informing treatment decisions, improving outcomes, and empowering patients in their care while avoiding unnecessary repeat procedures.
Additional survey findings show that 79% of patients value portable dental records that enable easy dentist changes without information loss, while 43.7% find accessing their dental information difficult or very difficult. Interestingly, 64.3% of patients are unfamiliar with the term interoperability, suggesting that while patients experience the practical consequences of poor data sharing, they may not recognize the technical solutions needed.
