The Italian Barrel in New Orleans has been awarded Wine Spectator's 2026 Award of Excellence for its outstanding wine program, which emphasizes wine as an integral part of the dining experience.

The Italian Barrel, a Northern Italian restaurant in New Orleans' French Quarter, has been honored with the 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. The award, part of Wine Spectator's annual Restaurant Awards, recognizes restaurants with exceptional wine programs. This year, 4,012 restaurants worldwide received awards across three tiers: Award of Excellence, Best of Award of Excellence, and Grand Award. The Italian Barrel earned the Award of Excellence, which requires at least 75 wine selections that are well-chosen, quality-focused, and thematically aligned with the menu.
"Wine is part of the natural rhythm of a meal at The Italian Barrel—not an afterthought, but something to explore slowly, share generously and enjoy course by course," said Lori and Kevin Cates, co-owners of The Italian Barrel. "This recognition belongs to our entire team, whose knowledge, care and hospitality make every bottle and every table feel personal."
The award highlights the restaurant's commitment to integrating wine into the dining experience. The Italian Barrel, located at 1240 Decatur Street, is known for its intimate, candlelit atmosphere and Northern Italian cuisine, featuring seasonal pastas and carefully sourced ingredients. The wine program, deeply Italian, is designed to complement the menu and encourage guests to savor their meals.
Wine Spectator's Restaurant Awards were launched in 1981 and are highly regarded in the industry. The special issue detailing the winners will be available on newsstands July 21, 2026. For more information on this year's winners, visit WineSpectator.com/Restaurants, which features a searchable database and interviews with leading wine directors.
The Italian Barrel's recognition underscores the growing trend of diners becoming more selective about their wine choices, as noted by Wine Spectator Chairman and CEO Marvin R. Shanken: "The restaurant industry is rapidly transforming as diners become more selective about when, how and what they drink. As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs."
Lori and Kevin Cates, who took over the restaurant from founder Chef Samantha Castagnetti, have continued her vision of honoring Northern Italian traditions. The restaurant offers indoor and heated outdoor seating and can be found on OpenTable.
