The future of Swann Park, a historic sports park in South Baltimore, remains uncertain as discussions about a potential land swap with West Covington Park continue, highlighting community concerns and the park's rich baseball history.

The future of Swann Park, an 11-acre sports park in South Baltimore, is under discussion as part of the broader Baltimore Peninsula development project. Originally slated for replacement in the 2016 master plan for Port Covington, now known as Baltimore Peninsula, Swann Park has remained operational despite plans to relocate its athletic fields to an expanded West Covington Park. The park, which has served the community for decades, was closed in 2007 due to arsenic contamination but reopened in 2010 after remediation and renovations.
Swann Park features Al Kaline Field, a full-size baseball field named after the Baseball Hall of Famer who grew up nearby, along with a football/soccer field, two softball or youth baseball fields, and a closed bath and field house. A monument installed in 2019 honors Thomas Swann, the park's namesake, and commemorates the park's history as the home of a notable 19u amateur baseball team that produced over 175 professional players. The plaque was designed to be movable, anticipating potential changes to the park's location.
Recent developments include an email from the Baltimore Peninsula Development team, which includes MAG Partners, MacFarlane Partners, Sagamore Ventures, and the Urban Investment Group within Goldman Sachs Asset Management. The email encouraged submitting letters of support to Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott for a land swap between city-owned Swann Park and the Baltimore Peninsula Development team-owned West Covington Park. This move has sparked discussions about the park's future and its significance to the community, especially given its historical and recreational value. For more details, visit https://citybiz.com.
