Trilogy Metals has executed definitive agreements for a $35.6 million strategic investment from the U.S. Department of War to advance its Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects, underscoring government support for domestic critical mineral supply.

Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) has taken a significant step forward in advancing its copper and critical minerals projects in Alaska by executing definitive agreements with the U.S. Department of War for a strategic equity investment totaling approximately $35.6 million. This investment, which was previously announced, is designed to support the exploration and development of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) in northwestern Alaska, a region rich in copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver.
The agreements outline a two-pronged investment approach: the department will invest approximately $17.8 million directly into Trilogy Metals, with an equal amount invested through a transaction with joint venture partner South32 Limited (ASX, LSE, JSE: S32; ADR: SOUHY). The proceeds from this investment are committed to the advancement of the UKMP, which is held by Ambler Metals LLC, a 50/50 joint venture between Trilogy Metals and South32. Upon completion of the transaction, the U.S. government is expected to hold approximately 10% of Trilogy Metals on a non-diluted basis. The transaction is expected to close in September 2026, subject to customary closing conditions.
This investment underscores the strategic importance of the Ambler Mining District, which is considered one of the most prospective copper-dominant districts globally. The district hosts polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. Trilogy Metals' exploration efforts have focused on two key deposits: the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit. Both are located within a land package spanning approximately 190,929 hectares.
The involvement of the U.S. Department of War highlights the federal government's interest in securing domestic sources of critical minerals, particularly copper, which is essential for national defense, infrastructure, and the transition to clean energy. By investing in these projects, the government aims to reduce reliance on foreign imports and strengthen the domestic supply chain. This move aligns with broader U.S. policy initiatives to boost domestic mining and processing of critical minerals.
Trilogy Metals has also established an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, an Alaska Native Corporation, which provides a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities. This partnership is crucial for ensuring that development respects subsistence livelihoods and local traditions, a key consideration for any large-scale mining operation in Alaska. The company's vision is to develop the Ambler Mining District into a premier North American copper producer while protecting these values.
The investment from the U.S. government is a strong endorsement of the projects' potential and the company's approach. It provides not only financial backing but also validates the strategic importance of the UKMP. With the global demand for copper expected to rise due to electrification and renewable energy technologies, projects like these are vital for meeting future supply needs.
