The U.S. Department of the Interior's transfer of 1.4 million acres to Alaska could boost infrastructure for the Ambler Mining District, advancing critical mineral exploration.

Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) has welcomed the U.S. Department of the Interior’s decision to transfer approximately 1.4 million acres of federal land within Alaska’s Dalton Utility Corridor to the State of Alaska. The company said this move could support infrastructure development, including the proposed Ambler Road project, and help advance critical mineral exploration and development in the Ambler Mining District.
The land transfer is seen as a key step for the Ambler Mining District, which hosts polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt. Trilogy Metals, through its 50% interest in Ambler Metals LLC (with South32 holding the other 50%), holds a 100% interest in the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) located within the district. The UKMP spans approximately 190,929 hectares and includes the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit.
“This land transfer is a critical step toward unlocking the mineral potential of the Ambler Mining District,” said a company spokesperson. “The Ambler Road project is essential for accessing these resources, which are vital for the domestic supply of critical minerals needed for clean energy technologies and national security.” The proposed Ambler Road would provide access to the district, which is one of the richest known copper-dominant districts globally.
The announcement aligns with broader U.S. efforts to secure domestic sources of critical minerals. The Biden administration has emphasized reducing reliance on foreign supply chains for materials like copper, cobalt, and zinc, which are essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy infrastructure, and defense applications. The Ambler Mining District could become a significant domestic source of these metals.
Trilogy Metals has an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation, providing a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities. The company’s vision is to develop the Ambler Mining District into a premier North American copper producer while protecting subsistence livelihoods.
