U.S. Achieves Record 48,000 Organ Transplants in 2024, Advocates for System Improvements

The United States reached a significant milestone in organ transplantation in 2024, performing a record 48,149 organ transplants, representing an average of 132 transplants per day. This achievement was made possible through the contributions of 16,988 deceased donors and 7,030 living donors, highlighting the critical role of donor families and medical professionals nationwide.

UNOS CEO Maureen McBride emphasized the profound human impact behind these numbers, stating that each transplant represents an individual life saved or improved. The organization is now advocating for comprehensive policy reforms to further enhance the organ donation and transplantation system.

The proposed reforms include several key legislative recommendations aimed at increasing organ donor referrals and improving organ transportation and allocation. These include mandating automated donor referrals, requiring in-cabin airline transportation for organs, implementing a national tracking system for unaccompanied organs, and creating financial incentives for hospitals to accept more medically complex organ donations.

UNOS estimates that these reforms could potentially prevent approximately 4,000 deaths and significantly increase both donor referrals and successful organ transplantations. The proposed changes represent a strategic approach to addressing current inefficiencies in the organ donation system.

While celebrating the record-breaking number of transplants, McBride acknowledged that more work remains to be done. The organization remains committed to continuous improvement, recognizing that patients are still waiting for life-saving organ transplants.
